Creating Space To Breathe

When Mark and Stephanie first reached out to DRAW Design Studios, they weren’t looking for “more house.” They were looking for breathing room.

After years of raising three active kids in the city, they had purchased a quiet acreage just outside of Sherwood Park with a vision of creating a home that felt connected to the land around it. They wanted wide-open views, natural light in every direction, and spaces that felt calm, warm, and welcoming after busy days of work, hockey practices, and family life.

Like many clients, they arrived with a collection of ideas gathered over several years — screenshots saved late at night, hand-drawn sketches, Pinterest boards, and a growing list of “must-haves” and “definitely nots.” They loved modern architecture, but didn’t want the home to feel cold or overly trendy. They wanted something timeless. Something that felt like them.

Designing Around Everyday Life

During our early design meetings, one thing became clear very quickly: this home needed to function just as beautifully on a quiet Tuesday morning as it would during a house full of family at Christmas. Stephanie dreamed of a kitchen that could handle everything from school lunches to large holiday gatherings, while Mark wanted a dedicated workshop and garage space that finally gave him room to work on projects without taking over the entire house.

Together, we designed a home centered around connection. Expansive windows frame the prairie landscape from nearly every room. A soaring great room opens into a warm, layered kitchen with natural wood tones and hidden functionality throughout.

A Home Built Around Connection

The private primary suite was carefully positioned to capture sunrise views over the property, while the kids’ wing created a sense of independence without disconnecting the family.

One of the most rewarding moments came near the end of the design process, when Stephanie paused during a walkthrough of the plans and quietly said, “This finally feels real. This feels like home.”

That moment is why we do what we do.

More Than A Custom Acreage Home

The finished design became more than just a custom acreage home — it became a place intentionally shaped around the way this family lives, gathers, rests, and grows together.
